He had known this was coming.

For weeks, he'd been able to sense it.

His death. Or, rather, his regeneration.

The end of one era and the beginning of an entirely new one.

He'd been carrying around so much. Pain, anger, guilt. So many things had happened that shouldn't have, and he blamed himself for it. Sometimes he thinks his companions would have been better off never knowing him, because all he seems to do is hurt them, or cause them to be hurt. So many of them... sometimes, he thinks, all of them.

They'd be better off with him, but him... he wouldn't be the man he is without every single one of them. They've made him whole... complete. They've made him the man that he is, each and every one of them, and he knows in his hearts that no matter what, as he continues on with the good fight, he'll continue to carry a little piece of them with him. But he still can't help the way he feels, can't stop the haunting of his senses.

Today, he's haunted by Donna. Rose may have been his soulmate in so many ways, but Donna was truly his best friend. She was his platonic soulmate.

He was still thinking of her when he arrived in London this morning, and soon learned that he wasn't the only one having a bad day. Some mysterious entity was wreaking havoc on the city, practically tearing it apart. He couldn't resist the urge to step in and try to save the day. And he did... at a price.

He's on the ground, gasping for air, his hand covering a wound in his slender side.

The moment has arrived.

He's dying again.

He finds himself thanking Rassilon that the TARDIS is close by, and manages to get to it before it's too late.

As he stands upright and leans back against the console, head back, he has a sense of deja vu.

The last time he was standing here, they were all with him.

Donna, Rose, Jack.

That was before all hell had broken loose, and he'd lost the two most important women in his life.

Now he's alone.

And if he has any say so, he always will be.

His head jerks forward as the regeneration process completes, and he realizes he's just been smacked in the back of the neck with hair. Long hair. It's enough to make his brow raise.

"What..."

He starts, and when he hears the voice come out, his eyes widen.

That's a woman's voice.

He glances down, and his eyes grow wider at what he sees.

"...I have... breasts. Breasts."

Boy, and does that voice sound familiar. Very familiar.

Puzzlement etching across his... er, her features, she starts to make her way toward the full-length mirror a short distance away. She walks on somewhat wobbly, new legs, and recognizes in an instant that her clothes are far too tight. Boy, she's really filled out.

The new new new Doctor takes a deep breath, closing her eyes, and then slowly moves in front of the mirror.

The very idea of a Time Lord regenerating into a female was almost unheard of. The Doctor hadn't really heard of it happening much, so the now-female Doctor finds this highly unusual. She dreads what she may look like, and hopes she isn't too terrible to look at.

When she opens her eyes, she's completely and utterly stunned.

"What..."

Donna Noble.

Donna Noble is staring back at her.

"W-Wha..."

She blinks, and wonders if the TARDIS is playing a trick on her.

She locates another mirror, and checks her reflection in it as well.

"...What?" The word comes out completely flat this time. "I'm... Donna?"

And as she says her friend's name, she realizes that it's Donna's voice coming out of her mouth.

For a long moment, all she can do is stand there, staring at her reflection.

And then, finally...

A grin.

"At least I'm ginger."
